Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, is counted among the biggest forts of India. The fort narrates numerous stories about the royal past of the state and takes you back into time when some of the most legendary rulers ruled here and left their marks on its soil. The fort’s imposing walls still stand high with pride and it charms many history seekers from all over the world.
This fort was built by Rao Jodha and is situated on a 150m high hill. It is one of the largest forts in India & still run by the Maharaja of Jodhpur. This fort has a museum which houses antiques, ornaments & weapons and literature including some unique products like 'Pea Pulao Poster'.
The Fort was originally named Chintamani, after the Mythological gem worn by Lord Rama that is believed to free its wearer of all worldly worries. A subsequent name given to this Fort was Mordhwaj, The Flag of the Peacock, perhaps because the outer parameter of the fort gives the impression of the fan like tail of a dancing peacock. Later, the name Mehrangarh started appearing in chronicles and poems. Mehr in Rajasthani language means the Sun; perhaps for this reason the Suryavanshi Rathores named their first citadel in the honor of their mythological ancestor.
The fort is a delightful mix of elaborate latticed windows, intricately carved panels and gracefully curved porches. Every part of the fort has a distinctive appeal, the Moti Mahal, Phool Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Sileh Khana and Daulat Khana all add to the distinct ambience of the fort. High on the wall is the second largest cannon in Asia, whose recoil itself requires as large an area as a football field!
