Jantar Mantar, Jaipur

Jantar Mantar, Jaipur The famous Jantar Mantar is one of the five astronomical observatories built by Maharaja Jai Singh II who had a keen interest in astronomy and other sciences. Built from 1727 to 1733, Jantar Mantar is a collection of astronomical instruments built of stone and marble. A counterpart of Jantar Mantar is also there in New Delhi. This building is also a national monument of India and is one of the most visited monuments in Jaipur.

The name Jantar Mantar is a corruption of the Sanskrit words Yantra and Mantra and literally means ‘the chanting devices’. There are fourteen devices that are used to measure the movement of heavenly bodies. These devices have captivated the interest of architects, artists and art historians due to their uniqueness and accuracy.
