The State of Rajasthan was formed by merging the various erstwhile princely cities such as Jaipur, Mewar, Marwar, Bundi, Kota and Bikaner. Most of these were no bigger than the cities such as Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Udaipur and Bikaner in their present forms with surrounding villages. During the time of British rule, this entire area was popularly referred to as the Rajputana.
Due to royal heritage, each city in Rajasthan is now a popular tourist destination, being blessed as they are with forts, palaces, lush gardens, museums, heritage hotels and the romance of history, besides limitless shopping options and a fine cuisine.
